Travel footprint for Expo 2015

Project carried out within a collaboration between the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano and the Italian Ministry of Environment on the carbon footprint of big events.

The project concerned the design of the requirements and functionalities of a personal application for the reduction of travel carbon footprint. The app is meant to support the Expo Milano 2015 visitors to monitor and reduce their environmental impact.

The proposed solutions consider both improvement and adjustment of existing mobile information systems available locally, both the implementation of an app able to provide the following features:

  • multimodal trip planning at a local and global scale;
  • emissions estimate, ex ante (for the proposed travel solution) and ex post (for a possible compensation);
  • calculation of routes using real-time data and time dependent parameters (eg. traffic conditions, public transport state).
